Rigging & sails

Reefing a fractional rig

With 14.6 m² in the main and 13 m² in the jib, the main is the sail that has to come down first — which is not how many owners rig their boats.

The mainsail is the bigger of the two working sails. On a fractional rig that means depowering starts at the mast, not at the forestay.

Slab reefing that works

Two lines led aft, both reachable from the companionway. A boat this size does not need single-line reefing and its friction.

Marking the halyard

Mark the halyard for each reef. Then reefing is pulling to a mark rather than judging a shape in the dark.

When to take it

Earlier than feels necessary. She sails better upright, and a reef in at 18 knots is faster than a rail down at 20.
